Gallery 136 High Street, Margate Ct9 1JW
I’m an artist/educator based in Margate in Kent and founder of GoCreate.co.uk which runs creative workshops and events. My primary practice is oil painting and over the years my painting has journeyed from realism to smudgy impressions. I also have secondary and tertiary projects and artforms which allow me to explore materiality, processes and to […]Read More »

Margate…

If it inspired Turner, Keets and made Tracey Emmin…

Come see us  in Margate and experience art the way you’ll never experience in a studio or find on the Internet.
Over 3 days you’ll see all of Margate, but we’ll also teach you how to observe it, respond instinctively and build up a collection of visual information. Hope it doesn’t sound like work because it really just starts and finishes with you exploring the seaside town in groups or individually; and thinking like an artist.
Each day will be different:
Day 1.
Drawing mediums and approaches
We’ll start at base with a welcome and point out different drawing approaches and advise on working outdoors generally. For those new to drawing we’ll offer basic drawing tips whilst those with more experience will be taken through a series of warm up exercises, designed to encourage a switch of drawing mediums. If we’re ready we’ll take a 5 minute walk to the Main Sands and Dreamland where we’ll embark on outdoor sketching and painting if preferred until lunch time. Students can bring a packed lunch to enjoy on the beach or choose to eat in one of the many places and budgets around Margate. In the afternoon students can continue to create/document the outdoors or develop what will be paintings and drawings back at base.

Day 2.
Exploring the local culture and heritage
We’ll give acrylic and mixed media tutorials and offer advice on outdoor methods of working on ‘studies.’
We’ll meet at The Warpole Bay hotel for a short presentation which lets you get beneath the surface of Margate, to really understand its cultural heritage. We’ll introduce themes to inspire and discuss approaches to your series of sketches, or just ideas for projects developing into a final piece. At 11am we’ll indulge in cream tea in the hotel lounge and be on Tracey Emmin watch, just in case she forgot to sign one of her pieces on display there. We can then walk towards the Turner, passing some heritage sites before being taken on a guided tour of the current exhibition at the Turner. After lunch we’ll meet back at base to review sketches or project ideas. Students will be given further creative and directional support or left to work outdoors.
Day 3.
Personal project development
Having gathered a wealth of inspirational material, students will be given absolute  freedom to develop individual projects. But we’re always around to help, support or direction where necessary. We’ll start the day back with a presentation of local artists/artworks and further sites of cultural interest just in case  you were still curious about Margate as a town, and Maybe include contemporary Margate and how creatives today are responding to the town.  Rise Up Residency project, shop window fronts, North down road lgbtq+ collective,..

– Includes some basic materials and use of equipment such as easles, drawing boards…
– Demonstrations and tutorial
