If you’re expecting a scene from Ghost,
then buy the DVD.

But If you’re looking for real wheel pottery, excellent tuition and personal support when needed then book a Go Create wheel weekend. This course is suitable for absolute beginners or those wishing more wheel practice under the guidance of our brilliant potter, artists in their own right. Each student will work at their own wheel to maximize the understanding of the craft.

Our Wheel throwing Weekend is more than just a great alliteration, it includes: practical demonstrations,  inspiring talks, examples of contemporary ceramic practice and plenty of hands on practice under the watchful eye of an experienced potter. For some of our potters that’s more than 30 years! This is a great introduction to wheel thrown pottery and lets you make your gifts, kitchenware, etc. the right way…and for use.

Day 1
On day one, we’ll get you started in wheel pottery basics. The morning will start with a tutor demonstration on clay preparation and and then how to thow a pot on the wheel. – that’s the technical term. Each student will then work at a wheel for plenty of hands-on practice at making a cylinder or bowl.  In the afternoon you can expect some handle pulling – again a technical term form making a handle which can adorn your cylinder (thereby creating a mug, tea-pot or dish with handles.  Expect a few disasters and a few successes. We’ll fire and glaze your successes and recycle the rest.

Day 2
Depending on the interests of the group the tutor may start with a refresher demonstration. There will be some time for basic practice before a tutor demonstration on how to turn and trim a pot to ensure a neat base.  Students will attempt to turn and trim their own pots before decorating with coloured slips.  In the afternoon the tutor will demonstrate how to throw a plate and how to create a simple teapot. Students can then attempt these more advanced items with tutor support.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  • Wedging and kneading
  • Centering
  • Wheel throwing
  • Lifting and trimming
  • Coloured slip decoration
  • Turning a plate
  • Handle pulling

We fire and glaze your best 5 pieces.
